The difference between gasoline and diesel engines

Ignition mode: Diesel uses the compression stroke to heat the fuel and air mixture

Ignition Mode: Diesel engines use compression to heat the fuel-air mixture, reaching its ignition point and burning to achieve ignition without spark plugs. Gasoline engines use an electronic ignition device above the injector to generate an electric spark, igniting the gasoline and achieving ignition. Electronic components are required.

Fuel Consumption: Compared to gasoline, diesel fuel has higher energy density, a higher ignition point, and lower volatility. Due to these characteristics, diesel engines have 30% better fuel economy than gasoline engines. That is, under the same driving conditions, a gasoline car might consume 10 liters, while a diesel car would consume around 7 liters.

Acceleration: Diesel engines work not by ignition, but by compressing the fuel mixture, allowing it to self-ignite upon reaching its ignition point. This process is slower than gasoline engine ignition, and consequently, the conversion of energy into speed is slower than in gasoline engines. Therefore, under the same conditions, diesel cars accelerate slower than gasoline cars.

Noise: Due to the different mechanical principles of gasoline and diesel engines, diesel fuel burns under pressure, requiring compression to a certain degree to generate power, resulting in a louder explosion sound. In real-world driving, it's noticeable that diesel engines are noisier than gasoline engines.

Engine Speed Differs

Gasoline-powered vehicles have high rotational speed characteristics; gasoline car engines can rotate up to 5000-6000 rpm, while truck gasoline engines reach up to 4000 rpm. Diesel engines have low rotational speeds, with a maximum speed of around 2500-3000 rpm.

Different Production and Repair Costs

Compared to diesel engines, gasoline engines have a simpler design, lower cost, and easier maintenance, resulting in lower production costs. The high production cost of diesel engines is mainly reflected in the manufacturing process of various fuel system components, with high precision requirements for parts like injectors, high-pressure oil pumps, and exhaust valves. Maintenance costs are also higher.

Difference in Power and Lifespan

Compared to gasoline engines, diesel engines are characterized by high power, long lifespan, and good dynamic performance.
